Not for this article though! AI is great for certain types of writing, but personal essays are best written by actual humans.

If you’d asked me if I use AI in my writing this time last year, you would have gotten nothing but a confused look. Maybe even an angry, slightly offended one. I have been writing for over a decade and have never even considered outsourcing it to anyone or anything. I pride myself in my style, my voice, the way I choose my words.

So when someone did ask me about how I use ChatGPT for my work two years ago — back in the day I was a freelance journalist and translator — I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t live under a rock; I’d heard about the basic concept of AI, but I’d never heard of ChatGPT and had no idea what it was for.
